The residents of Estonia can open an account without visiting a bank office. Log in to our self-service system by using your ID-card, Smart-ID or MobiIe-ID, identify yourself by using the data from the Population Register and fill in the customer questionnaire.

If you have a current account, you can make domestic and foreign payments through Internet banking or at a Bank office, deposit money in Euro and foreign currencies, use a debit and credit card, and apply for a loan. Services such as cash transactions, securities account, safe deposit boxes, operations with checks from European banks are also connected to the bank account.

The Personal Banking Customer receives:

  • free SEPA-payments through Internet banking

  • Debit MasterCard with no monthly service fee and MasterCard credit card with discounted service fees

  • additional interest rate on time deposits in Euro (does not apply to interest rates set within terms of the Bank’s deposit campaigns)

Personal banking is provided for resident private customers older than 18 years whose current account has received permanent income during the last three months: salary, pension, scholarship, royalty or other taxed financial income (min. 500 EUR); or who deposits at least 20,000 EUR (or equivalent in currency) annually. Personal Banking Client’s  status is assigned based on the client’s request.

Residents of the Republic of Estonia

General information

Residents of the Republic of Estonia are considered to be people who have:

  • Citizenship of the Republic of Estonia
  • Long-term residence permit
  • Temporary residence permit
  • Right of permanent residence of a citizen of the European Union
  • The right of temporary residence of a citizen of the European Union

To open a current account for refugees at a bank branch, please submit the following documents:

  • Estonian temporary residence permit card (ID card);
  • A copy of the decision to grant temporary protection or a residence permit;
  • Identification document of a citizen of a foreign state
  • Completed customer’s questionnaire

Refugees are subject to the same price list as residents of the Republic of Estonia.

Opening and managing a current account free of charge.

The decision about account opening will be made as soon as possible, but usually not earlier than 30 banking days, assuming, that all necessary documents and information have been forwarded to the bank. The decision about opening an account is forwarded in the manner chosen by the customer, either by phone or e-mail.

It is possible to open a current account in both euro and foreign currency. To identify and open a current account, we are waiting for the client’s bank branch. If there is a need to open an additional account, the previously identified customer does not have to visit the bank branch the second time. The client can submit the application for opening an account and all the necessary documents digitally to the e-mail address helpdesk@tbb.ee.

Opening an account

The bank opens an account under the following conditions:

  • Bank has all the necessary information about the client
  • Upon opening an account and later during the business relationship, the necessary information is provided to the bank, which enables to apply customer due to diligence measures.
  • The purpose and nature of opening an account and the client’s activities are understandable to the bank

The bank does not open an account in the following cases:

  • When opening an account, all the necessary information is not provided, that would allow applying customer due to diligence measures at all times
  • It is not possible for the bank to identify or verify the origin of the customer’s assets
  • The client is included in the international list of persons involved in or suspected of money laundering or terrorism and its financing
  • The client is included in the UN, EU or US list of international sanctions

Documents for opening an account

Documents submitted to the bank:

  • Customer’s identity document
    • Identity card of a citizen of Estonia, another member state of the European Union, a member state of the European Economic Area or the Swiss Confederation (ID card)
    • Estonian or foreign passport (travel document)
    • Residence permit card issued in Estonia
    • Driving license issued in Estonia
  • Notarial power of attorney and identity document of the authorized person in case the authorized person wishes to open an account, or an authorized person communicates with a bank representative on the topic of opening an account on behalf of a client
  • In case of opening an account for a minor, the identity document of the parent or guardian
  • In case of opening an account for a person with limited legal capacity, the identity document and court decision of the guardian (preferably digital)
  • Customer questionnaire
  • Other additional documents requested by the bank

Opening a current account

  • Estonian private persons residents can conveniently open a current account without coming to a bank branch. Please fill in and sign the application on our website. The bank will contact you after receiving the application.
  • If it is not possible for you to use digital signature, please fill in the customer’s questionnaire
  • To open an account for a child, guardian, or authorized person, fill in the customer’s questionnaire
  • If you will use current accounts for the benefit of a third party, fill in the Beneficial Owner Questionnaire
  • Bring the completed questionnaires to a suitable our bank branch  and go through your identification. Questionnaires can be filled out directly at the branch.
  • After the bank has made a positive decision to open an account, we are waiting for you at our Tallinn or Narva customer office to sign the contracts

Residents of the Contracting States of the European Economic Area and non-residents entered in the Estonian Employment Register (TÖR) or related to a company that has an account in the Bank

General information

The following foreigners belong to the respective client group:

  • Citizens of the European Union, a Member State of the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation who do not have a temporary or permanent right of residence in Estonia
  • Non-residents, who are legally temporarily residing in Estonia and whose employment has been registered with the Police and Border Guard Board in the register of short-term employment before starting work
  • Non-residents, who are related to a company that has at least one current account with the Bank

Opening a current account according to the price list.

  • studying in Estonia
  • working in Estonia (the client is entered in the Estonian employment register (TÖR)
  • owning or renting real estate in Estonia (real estate purchased or rented before 23.02.2022). From 24.02.2022, in the case of the acquisition of real estate, it is assumed that the value of the property owned by one purchaser is at least 50,000 euros. The value of the property is estimated at the transaction price reflected in the contract of sale). In the case of renting real estate, there should be a clearly identifiable connection with the person’s economic activity in Estonia.
  • participation in a functioning Estonian company, which carries out significant economic activity
  • close relatives in Estonia (children, parents, spouse or partner)
  • Bank has all the necessary information about the client
  • Upon opening an account and later during the business relationship, the necessary information is provided to the bank, which enables to apply customer due to diligence measures.
  • The purpose and nature of opening an account and the client’s activities are understandable to the Bank

NB! An e-resident’s digital identity card is not an identity document and e-resident status alone is not a sufficient basis for opening a bank account. However, the e-resident’s digital identity card allows the contracts to be signed digitally without identifying the customer’s office after the person has been identified.

The bank does not open an account in the following cases:

  • The client does not have a strong connection with Estonia
  • When opening an account, all the necessary information is not provided, that would allow to apply customer due to diligence measures at all times
  • It is not possible for the Bank to identify or verify the origin of the customer’s assets
  • The client is included in the international list of persons involved in or suspected of money laundering or terrorism and its financing
  • The client is included in the UN, EU, or US list of international sanctions

Third-country resident, who does not have a residence permit to live in Estonia, who is not entered in the Estonian Employment Register (TÖR) and who is not related to a company that has an account in the Bank

For customers who are citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus who have a connection to Estonia, there is a limit on the balance on the current account(s) in the total amount of up to 100,000 euros or equivalent in other currency – the bank does not accept funds if the balance on the current account(s) account as a result of a possible transaction will exceed 100,000 euros.

Opening an account

Only a resident of a country belonging to the European Economic Area and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) may apply to open an account.

The bank opens an account under the following conditions:

  • The client has a strong connection to Estonia:
    • studying in Estonia

  • The client is included in the international list of persons involved in or suspected of money laundering or terrorism and its financing
  • The client is included in the UN, EU or US list of international sanctions
  • The client is a resident of Russia and Belarus, but does not have the citizenship of an EU member state or a country that is part of the European Economic Area or Switzerland

Opening a current account

The SMS notification about revenues to the settlement account

The SMS notification about revenues to the settlement account is Bank service which gives to the Client the opportunity, without login into Internet bank and without using the ATM, automatically to  receive from Bank in the form of the SMS on the mobile phone information about any revenues to the account.

To join this service, the Customer has to conclude an agreement at a branch office.

The Customer has the right to determine independently the account on which he wishes to receive information and to set minimum amount for sending SMS-messages.

The fee for all SMS-notifications sent during the month is added and deducted automatically from your account on the last calendar day of the month.

In case of replacement of the mobile phone number, the client must terminate the contract on the basis of old number and sign new contract, specifying the new number.

Updating customer data

We ask our clients to renew their data in connection with tax information exchange

If you are a taxable person (individual or legal person) in any country than Estonia, we ask you to fill in the Client Data Questionnaire where shall be added all tax residence countries and respective tax identification numbers.

There are several options for renewing customer data:

 Sending the filled in Client Data Questionnaire to the bank by e-mail or by mail (the electronically filled in Questionnaire must be signed and sent by e-mail to the address helpdesk@tbb.ee)

Please be aware that if a customer does not provide the required information, the financial institution will be obliged to submit data of the person to the Tax and Customs Board.

Starting 1 January 2016, Estonian financial institutions are obliged to ask customers to provide the bank with all tax residence countries (including USA) where customers pay taxes and their taxpayer identification number.

The legal grounds for gathering and exchanging tax information under FATCA and CRS legislation are stipulated in the Tax Information Exchange Act.

Under the CRS, jurisdictions like Estonian Tax and Customs Board obtain financial information from their financial institutions and automatically exchange that information with other jurisdictions on an annual basis.
